My Last Skiing Post on ‘Into The Woods’
No I haven’t quit skiing, no I didn’t seriously injure myself this season (though I had several close calls), and yes I think skiing is still amongst the most blogogenic topics. So what exactly am I going on about here? On the Mineral Basin chair at Snowbird, Utah, Jenny and I came up with the idea of a community blog for skiers to post all their stories and pictures together. The site is meant to support a network of skiers who have skied together or know one another, not an anonymous online skiing community of which there are many. As such, it may not grow very big, but should be fun for those involved. I’ll post alert-entries here whenever I or maybe somebody else has posted something interesting on Chronicles of Gnarnia.

Ben- We here in the northwest are hearing more about these park passes and I was wondering? Have you made a list of pro’s and con’s from a skier/rider stand point and a ski area’s view point?
Here are mine…
Skier/Rider—-pro’s- cut’s down on traffic in park (maybe), allows those learning to set a goal of being able to ride the advanced park, feature’s stay better maintained without people hacking them up and skiers/riders get a good vibe from others of equal skill making the park more fun.
Cons- any gaper or mom/dad can still just pay the money to get the pass to watch friends and family and not care about park etiquette, with some parks having more than one entry point the skier/rider must stop at all the entry points cutting down on the flow you get from park riding, the skier/rider still has the responsibility to make sure landings are clear(it might give some a false sense of security making them let there guard down), people duck ropes anyway why would this stop them and the groms who think there ready for the BIG park might not be but they will never know until they try so there will always be skiers/riders hacking takeoffs and landings.
SKi Area—-pro’s- allow for better defenses against frivolous lawsuits, extra income generated, helps park staff keep up with feature maintenance, can get more creative with features due to higher caliber(maybe) skiers/riders in BIG park, shows SOME a commitment to better parks and might draw better skiers/riders ie.. contests-filming-photo shoots.
Cons- Even now with the Ski Area Responsibility Act of 1964 which places the liability on the individual skier/rider court cases are won by those who hurt themselves through no fault of a ski area what makes this different, the income generated by $15-30 tickets won’t pay for the extra manpower that it will take for training and enforcement of a special park pass, why only a park pass for the BIG park all features are potentially equal when it comes to risk(falling on a jump or box or rail wrong can kill, no matter how big long or high), shouldn’t everyone starting with the groms who ride the park be enstilled with the same mentality and etiquette a terrain park needs(in turn even more man power and less enthusiasm from the skier/rider), ski areas must stop all Skier/riders upon entry into the park to ensure that they have a pass( if they don’t and someone who doesn’t have a pass rides a feature they must be liable if the person entered at a designated entry point right, more paperwork and filing of special passes, park skiers/riders can and should be able to see the commitment of the ski area in its quality of park features and contests and again whats to stop a gaper from just ponying up the money to hack his way to glory???!!!
These were my first thoughts about 3 hours ago when I heard about this maybe coming near my shred heaven and was hoping to get some feed back from someone who has obviously thought about this as well. It might be a little hard to read but please take your time and if you would shoot me a response. I would much appreciate it.
Cheers,
Seth Wallace
